A Mock Fire Drill Awareness Programme was conducted on 29 June 2026 by the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services for students of Grades IV to VIII. The programme aimed to create awareness about fire safety, emergency preparedness, disaster response, and the various rescue services provided by the department.

The session began with an introduction to the role of the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services in safeguarding lives and property. The officers explained the common causes of fire accidents in homes, schools, and public places and emphasized preventive measures and safe practices to minimize risks.

The awareness programme covered various aspects of fire safety, including the different classes of fires, the types and uses of fire extinguishers, emergency evacuation procedures, identifying safe exit routes, and the importance of remaining calm during emergencies. Students were educated on how to raise an alarm, report emergencies promptly, and follow the instructions of trained personnel during an evacuation.

A live demonstration of the correct use of fire extinguishers was conducted, introducing students to the PASS technique—Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep.

In addition to fire safety, the officers showcased a range of rescue equipment used during emergencies. Students were introduced to life-saving equipment used during water rescue and drowning incidents, along with specialized rescue tools used to safely capture and handle snakes during rescue operations. These demonstrations helped students understand the diverse responsibilities undertaken by the Fire and Rescue Services beyond firefighting.

The resource persons also educated students about the Fire and Rescue emergency helpline number – 101, explaining when and how it should be used responsibly during emergencies. This practical information enabled students to appreciate the importance of seeking timely professional assistance.

The interactive session encouraged students to ask questions, and the officers responded with practical examples and valuable safety tips. Students actively participated throughout the programme and gained a deeper understanding of fire prevention, emergency preparedness, rescue operations, and personal responsibility during emergencies.

The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks, expressing sincere appreciation to the officers of the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services for their informative presentation, engaging demonstrations, and dedicated efforts in equipping students with essential life-saving knowledge.

As a takeaway from the event, students shared that they had learned the importance of staying calm during emergencies, using the correct emergency procedures, recognizing the purpose of different rescue equipment, understanding the safe use of fire extinguishers, following evacuation protocols, and responsibly using the Fire and Rescue emergency number 101. The programme proved to be an enriching and impactful learning experience, empowering students with practical safety knowledge and fostering confidence in responding appropriately during emergency situations.
